2nd edition of the Sommet Climat Montréal: An ambitious program to tackle the climate emergency

Montréal, April 5, 2023 – Partenariat Climat Montréal, in collaboration with the Ville de Montréal, unveils the headliners for the 2nd edition of the Sommet Climat Montréal. More than 800 people from the business, philanthropic, political, community, environmental and civil society communities are expected to attend the 2023 edition of this annual gathering, which will take place on May 9 and 10, 2023 at the Port of Montreal’s Grand Quay.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante will kick off the Summit, accompanied by Quebec Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Geneviève Guilbault, and Quebec Minister of the Environment, Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks Benoit Charette. Then it will be the turn of major players in the metropolis to announce ambitious new climate commitments during a round table discussion moderated by Christian Savard, General Manager of Vivre en Ville.

The federal Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, will open Day 2 of the Summit, on May 10 at 9 a.m., followed by leading personalities such as David Miller, Executive Director of the C40, and Dr. María Neira, Director of the Department of Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health of the World Health Organization (WHO). This edition will also provide an opportunity to follow up on the climate commitments made at the Sommet Climat Montréal 2022.

Focus on mobility

“The Montreal Climate Summit is a key event for accelerating the ecological transition. This major challenge requires concrete action from the entire community, and this year’s event will be an opportunity to continue implementing the actions needed to ensure the city’s resilience, in collaboration with our partners. Montreal’s environmental ambitions stand out on the international scene, and this summit will be an opportunity to discuss the progress made under the Climate Plan, while presenting the City’s next steps towards carbon neutrality, particularly in terms of mobility,” declares Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montreal.

“To meet the city’s climate challenge, we need to unite all our forces: economic, philanthropic, institutional and community. Let’s take the example of mobility, which is the number 1 source of greenhouse gases in Montreal: meeting the dual challenge of congestion and reducing GHG emissions will require the mobilization of all players around a common vision. This mobilization is already well underway among all those taking part in the Summit, and we hope that the event will raise their level of ambition,” declare Partenariat Climat Montréal co-presidents Karel Mayrand, President and CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montreal, and Éric St-Pierre, Executive Director of the Trottier Family Foundation.

Over 25 organizations and a hundred stakeholders united for an ambitious program

After a first morning that will set the tone for an ambitious 2023 edition, the Montreal Climate Summit will bring together hundreds of leaders from all walks of life over 2 days for some 30 activities to identify concrete, realistic and rapid courses of action to meet the city’s climate challenges. Themes such as mobility, buildings, adaptation, community and business support will be on the agenda. It will bring together all the efforts and expertise of the Montreal ecosystem to rapidly decarbonize buildings and transport, and make Montreal a more resilient and inclusive metropolis.

 About the Partenariat Climat Montréal

Launched at the initiative of the Foundation of Greater Montreal and the Trottier Family Foundation, the Partenariat Climat Montréal (PCM) is an independent initiative that brings together nearly a hundred economic, community, institutional and philanthropic organizations, with the mission of mobilizing key players in the Montreal community to help reduce GHG emissions by 55% by 2030 and put the metropolis on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The PCM follows on from the successful collaboration established in 2018-19 by a group of philanthropic foundations with the City of Montreal and the C40 Cities organization to develop the City’s Climate Plan, and draws inspiration from the best international mobilization models, such as Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission and the London Business Climate Leaders. The Partnership places the City at the forefront of the major global metropolises grouped within the C40, making the ecological transition a pillar of its prosperity and attractiveness. The initiative is funded by the Foundation of Greater Montreal, the Trottier Family Foundation, the McConnell Foundation and the Ville de Montréal.  For more information: climatmontreal.com
