Montreal, April 5, 2023 \u2013 The Montreal Climate Partnership, in collaboration with the City of Montreal, unveils the headliners of the 2nd edition of the Montreal Climate Summit. More than 800 people from the business, philanthropic, political, community, environmental and civil society communities are expected to attend the 2023 edition of this annual event, which will take place on May 9 and 10, 2023 at the Port of Montreal’s Grand Quay.<\/p>\n

Montr\u00e9al Mayor Val\u00e9rie Plante will kick off the Summit, accompanied by Genevi\u00e8ve Guilbault, Deputy Premier of Qu\u00e9bec and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and Benoit Charette, Qu\u00e9bec Minister of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks. It will then be the turn of major players in the city to announce new ambitious climate commitments as part of a round table moderated by Christian Savard, Executive Director of Vivre en Ville.<\/p>\n

Federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault will open Day 2 of the Summit on May 10 at 9 a.m., followed by high-profile figures such as David Miller, Executive Director of C40, and Dr. Mar\u00eda Neira, Director of the Department of Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization (WHO). This edition will also make it possible to follow up on the climate commitments<\/a> made at the 2022 Montreal Climate Summit.<\/p>\n

“The Montreal Climate Summit is an unmissable event to accelerate the ecological transition. This major challenge requires concrete actions from the entire community, and this edition will be an opportunity to continue implementing the actions necessary for the city’s resilience with our partners.” Montr\u00e9al’s environmental ambition stands out on the international stage, and this summit will be an opportunity to discuss the progress of the Climate Plan, while presenting the City’s next steps towards carbon neutrality, particularly in terms of mobility,” said Val\u00e9rie Plante, Mayor of Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n

“To meet the city’s climate challenge, it is necessary to join all our forces: economic, philanthropic, institutional and community. Take the example of mobility, which is the number 1 source of greenhouse gases in Montreal: meeting the dual challenge of congestion and reducing GHG emissions will require the mobilization of all stakeholders around a common vision. This mobilization is already very present among all those who will take part in the Summit, and we hope that the event will raise their level of ambition,” said the co-chairs of the Montreal Climate Partnership Karel Mayrand, President and CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montreal, and \u00c9ric St-Pierre, Executive Director of the Trottier Family Foundation.<\/p>\n

More than 25 organizations and a hundred or so stakeholders united for an ambitious program<\/h2>\n

After a first morning that will set the tone for an ambitious 2023 edition, the Montreal Climate Summit will bring together hundreds of leaders from all walks of life over 2 days around thirty activities to identify concrete, realistic and rapid courses of action to meet the city’s climate challenges. The themes of mobility, buildings, adaptation, community and business support will be on the agenda. It will thus pool all the efforts and expertise of the Montr\u00e9al ecosystem to quickly decarbonize buildings and transportation, and make Montr\u00e9al a more resilient and inclusive metropolis.<\/p>\n

About the Montreal Climate Partnership<\/h2>\n

Launched at the initiative of the Foundation of Greater Montreal and the Trottier Family Foundation, the Montreal Climate Partnership (MCP) is an independent initiative that brings together nearly a hundred economic, community, institutional and philanthropic organizations and whose mission is to mobilize key players in the Montreal community to help reduce GHG emissions by 55% by 2030 and put the city on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n

The CMP builds on the success of the collaboration established in 2018-19 by a group of philanthropic foundations with the City of Montreal and the organization C40 Cities for the development of the City’s Climate Plan and draws inspiration from the best models of mobilization at the international level, such as the Green Ribbon Commission in Boston and the London Business Climate Leaders. The Partnership places the City among the world’s major cities grouped within the C40 by making the ecological transition a pillar of its prosperity and attractiveness.
