The event was organized jointly by Espace quartiers and the \u201cVivre avec moins de voitures\u201d working group. <\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Verdun borough hosted this meeting at its offices. In fact, it was C\u00e9line-Audrey Beauregard, a Verdun borough councilmember and a citizen committed to the ecological transition, who opened the evening\u2019s proceedings.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our daily dependence on cars\u2014driven by urban planning and the symbolic significance society attaches to them<\/strong>\u2014was discussed by Pauline Wolff, head of research and evaluation at Solon and director of practical training at the University of Montreal. Given the scale   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structural mobility challenges, e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she emphasized <strong>the importance of taking action at the neighborhood level<\/strong>, where we have power and influence. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Social justice and equity<\/strong> were the analytical frameworks used throughout the evening during the<\/span>discussions and presentations. Lucas Raimbault, from the Parc-Extension Neighborhood Council, highlighted the social and territorial inequities experienced in his neighborhood, as well as the polarization and tensions sparked by mobility projects. He also emphasized the importance of creating spaces for dialogue on these issues and bringing together people who support and oppose mobility projects.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Local initiatives to improve residents\u2019 quality of life and reduce the harmful impact of cars and trucking have been put forward.<\/strong>  Initiatives led by citizens, organizations, and boroughs are sure to inspire many others\u2026!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicky Saint-Pierre, Tania Konicheckis, and Francis Waddell commented on the initiatives taken by the Verdun borough and the citizen group Demain Verdun.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bataille, spokesperson for the Coalition Mobilit\u00e9 Active Montr\u00e9al, presented various initiatives developed by citizen groups in Ahuntsic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9milie Joly presented Solon\u2019s LocoMotion project, its impact, and its potential.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaise R\u00e9millard of the Montreal Regional Environment Council discussed the importance of parking mobilization, regulation, and management  <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeC\u2019s \u201cLiving with Fewer Cars\u201d group presented its collaboratively developed framework, which aims to equip neighborhood stakeholders with the tools to design initiatives to reduce the number of cars in their neighborhoods, using an approach grounded in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. A discussion workshop with attendees helped identify potential courses of action to prevent or reduce over-motorization at the neighborhood level, as well as the barriers and enablers for achieving these goals.
