We are unveiling our new Vision Statement for the Socio-Ecological Transition in Montreal
Montreal, November 19, 2025 — On the occasion of our Annual General Meeting, we are pleased to unveil the fully revised version of our Vision Statement for the Socio-Ecological Transition in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal.
This document marks an important milestone in our collective journey. Since 2022, more than 150 organizations, groups, and institutions—as well as thousands of citizens—have participated in a broad collaborative effort. Together, we have pooled our knowledge, experiences, and perspectives to outline an ambitious, well-grounded, and deeply collective vision.
This new version of the Vision Statement will now serve as our shared compass, guiding our work, our projects, and the proposals we will advance together in the years ahead.
A strong, well-established vision built collectively
Our vision is based on a widely shared observation: in the face of climate, social, economic, and democratic crises, no single organization can succeed on its own. The transition must be systemic, localized, inclusive, and shaped by active solidarity among all the city’s stakeholders.
Among the key elements of this vision, we highlight the following:
1. A transition rooted in neighborhoods and communities
Because it is in neighborhoods that solidarity, democratic innovations, and concrete responses to regional inequalities are expressed.
2. Participatory Democracy and Shared Governance
To empower communities, recognize citizens’ knowledge, and rethink how we make decisions together.
3. Environmental Justice
Because there can be no just transition without combating discrimination, systemic inequalities, and regional disparities.
4. Economies in Transition
To put resources and wealth back at the service of communities, support the social economy, and democratize local economic governance.
5. A Renewed Relationship with the Living
To recognize the abundance of life in Montreal, draw inspiration from Indigenous knowledge, and transform our relationship with ecosystems.
Thematic Areas of Focus to Bring the Vision to Life
Based on this common foundation, we have identified several thematic areas of action that are already giving rise to concrete initiatives within the alliance:

These areas of focus will continue to evolve as we deepen our work, learn together, and better understand the needs of our neighborhoods.
A compass to guide our future work
Our Vision Statement is neither static nor definitive: it is designed to be a living document, intended to be enriched year after year through the participation of our members, partners, and local communities.
It will play a central role in:

guide our thematic and regional work;

structure our collective actions and scale them up;

to clarify the public positions and proposals that we will put forward collectively;

to foster a shared and inspiring narrative for the socio-ecological transition in Montreal.
As we state in the Statement:
“Our vision for the socio-ecological transition serves as a shared compass and a living work in progress. It provides a collective direction for reimagining Montréal in a way that does justice to its neighborhoods, its residents, and the living beings that call it home.”
A deeply collective process
We would like to highlight the scope of the work we have accomplished together over the past three years.
This vision is the result of:

dozens of events, workshops, and opportunities for dialogue;

committed and rigorous thematic working groups;

essential contributions from community, academic, institutional, and citizen sectors;

a strong local presence supported by Espace Quartiers and local initiatives across the island.
