On November 19, we welcomed four powerful voices to a panel discussion to talk about the struggles and transformations that have shaped Montreal and Quebec, and to explore how we can draw lessons from them for the transition.

During the panel discussion, Marianne Giguère, a former city councilor and key figure in active transportation, looks back on the cycling revolution that propelled Montreal to the status of a leading cycling city; Maïtée Labrecque-Saganash, an author and activist, speaks out about the persistent challenges facing her nation and new structures—such as the Miyupimaatisiiun committees—that strengthen community autonomy and well-being; Jean Panet-Raymond, a pioneer in social development, recounts the inclusive campaign that protected Frédéric-Back Park and demonstrated the power of citizen alliances; finally, Laurence Bherer, a professor specializing in local democracy, sheds light on the legacy of the Montreal Summit and the evolution of tools such as the right of initiative to sustainably strengthen citizen power in the socio-ecological transition.
