September 16: Don’t miss the Citizens’ Dialogue on Municipal Democracy 2025!
Transition Together And the Institut du Nouveau Monde invites the public to this first event dedicated to municipal democracy, which will set the tone for the upcoming campaign. Our event stands out for its participatory format, giving a direct voice to citizens who submit questions in advance.
Local government is a form of grassroots governance, with elected officials who are often the first point of contact for citizens who want to bring about change. This is particularly true when it comes to the socio-ecological transition, since municipalities have several tools at their disposal to take concrete action and build the world of tomorrow.
Candidates will answer open-ended questions from the public—which were previously collected and selected in collaboration with the Participatory Democracy and Governance Committee of Transition en Commun—on topics such as the inclusion of marginalized voices, governance, local citizen participation, and Montreal’s democratic mechanisms.
Through these topics, the goal is to learn about the candidates’ positions on local issues that concern the public—particularly marginalized individuals—in a friendly atmosphere!

*Candidate selection criteria
Other candidates may be added to the event. INM and Transition en commun have established criteria for selecting candidates who can enrich the Citizen Dialogue while maintaining a balance. Invited candidates for mayor of Montreal must meet the criteria and rules of Elections Quebec and Elections Montreal, and one of the following criteria:

Be the leader of a political party that has publicly nominated candidates for at least 50% of the seats in at least 50% of the districts by September 10, 2025; OR
-
Receive at least 10% support in a poll published in an accredited media outlet by September 10.
